Understanding Tile Adhesive Coverage

Tile adhesive coverage is primarily determined by the trowel notch size, which controls how much adhesive is deposited on the surface. A larger notch deposits more adhesive, which is necessary for larger and heavier tiles to ensure full contact and prevent hollow spots.

Types of Tile Adhesive

Standard Adhesive (C1)

Basic cementitious adhesive for ceramic wall tiles on sound plaster or cement render. Not suitable for floors, porcelain, or areas with movement. Cheapest option at £8-12 per 20kg bag. Brands: BAL Max Flex Fibre, Mapei Adesilex P9.

Flexible Adhesive (S1/S2)

Modified with polymers for flexibility. Essential for: floor tiles, porcelain tiles, underfloor heating, plywood/timber substrates, and any area subject to vibration or thermal movement. S1 is standard flex, S2 is highly deformable. £12-20 per 20kg bag. Brands: Weber Set SPF, Mapei Keraquick S1, BAL Rapid Flex One.

Rapid-Set Adhesive

Sets in 3-6 hours rather than 24. Ideal for time-critical jobs — you can grout the same day. Slightly more expensive at £14-22 per 20kg bag. Available in standard and flexible versions. Mapei Keraquick S1 is both rapid-set and flexible.

Ready-Mixed Adhesive

Pre-mixed paste in tubs. Very convenient for small wall tile jobs. NOT suitable for floor tiles, porcelain, wet areas, or large tiles. Coverage is lower (2-3 m² per 15kg tub). £12-18 per tub. Only use for light ceramic wall tiles on sound plaster.

Large Format Tiles (600mm+)

Tiles over 600x600mm require special attention. In addition to using a 12mm notch trowel, you should back-butter the tile (apply a thin layer of adhesive to the back of the tile as well as the substrate). This ensures 100% bed coverage. Any voids under large tiles can lead to cracking when walked on. Use a flexible S1 adhesive and consider a self-levelling compound to ensure the substrate is perfectly flat — large tiles show even small undulations.
